As part of achieving our goals we have a newly created Principal- Open Pit Mining Engineer position in our Technical Services and Studies team based in Brisbane. This team is a shared service to Aeris operations and projects and provides technical support, development of long-term plans, governance of technical standards, supports operational excellence, and manages studies.
Reporting directly to the Chief Technical Officer, the Principal Open Pit Mining Engineer provides regular updates on mine performance, planning outcomes, and improvement initiatives related to open cut projects and operational areas. With multiple green and brown fielded projects as well as an existing open pit, this role will be a significant influence on existing, future and long term strategic plans.
This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for delivering strategic and operational guidance across Aeris' open pit mining operations. Working closely with site-based teams and contractors, the Principal Mining Engineer drives and optimises open pit performance, safety, and value creation. The role ensures the delivery of optimised mine plans, fosters continuous improvement in mining practices, and maintains alignment with Life of Mine (LOM) strategies.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide expert technical input and oversight to open pit mining projects, including pit shells optimisation and design, mining method selection, equipment strategy, and schedule optimisation to ensure alignment with operational and strategic goals
- Review and validate short, medium, and long-term mine plans and schedules.
- Ensure alignment of operational activities with strategic business objectives.
- Lead the review and continuous improvement of mine planning processes.
- Identify and implement opportunities to optimise pit design, scheduling, and equipment utilisation.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of Life of Mine (LOM) plans.
- Mentor and coach site-based technical and operational teams to build capability and ensure best practices.
- Facilitate knowledge transfer and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with the Contract Manager to manage contractor performance and relationships.
- Provide technical input during contractor reviews, planning meetings, and operational discussions.
- Ensure compliance with relevant mining regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
- Prepare and present technical reports and strategic recommendations to executive leadership.
We are looking for a highly capable professional with proven experience in open pit mine planning, influencing operations and working with teams and stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes. Specific experience in hardrock mining will be highly regarded.
